Errol Lewis
Sculptor, Painter, Multi-Media Artist
a Biography
"Art is a mirror placed, reflecting life and it´s marvelous events...it´s a drama expressed in its movements and vibrations."
Born in Westmoreland, Jamaica, West Indies.Errol Lewis was educated at Cornwall College and the Jamaica School of Art (now the Edna Manley School for the Visual Arts), where he majored in sculpture and graduated in 1980 with a distinction and a credit in art education. His artistic talent became evident at about seven years of age, when he started modeling clay obtained from water holes. Dolls, trucks and human figures were sculped from this clay. There was also a profound love for the drawing of cartoon characters which he persued throughout primary and high schools. This interest in art grew and he was considered an artist in primary and high schools where posters, teaching aids and all art-related matters were assigned to him.
"I am drawn to the ripples in a pond - the subtle lines and moving forms and shadows, tones of gray. I create profound things, sometimes from sources I cannot explain... of this I know, the bulk of my insperation comes from my closeness with nature... my guide."
From 1979 - 1983, Errol cast sculptures for famed Jamaican sculptresses, Edna Manley ( mother of Michael Manley, the Prime Minister of Jamaica at that time ) and Kay Sullivan.
There was a nine-year period when he taught art in various schools in Jamaica and New York. Over the years, he has worked his way into being recognized as an important and prolific artist, through many exhibitions and privat collections. He is now actively engaged into expanding the quality, range and availability of Jamaican fine arts and decorative crafts in Jamaican as well as the United States.
